Summer is right around the corner, and while the season brings sunshine and fun, it also comes with challenges for our skin. If you’re struggling with breakouts during the hot months, you’re not alone.

We’ve enlisted licensed esthetician, Oni Chaves, to share expert insights and help you achieve your best summer skin yet. From our Q&A session, Oni is sharing key factors that contribute to skin breakouts during the summer months and providing tips to adjust your skincare routine to combat increased oil production and avoid common mistakes. Plus, we’ll dive into the importance of hydration, the best ingredients to seek out (and those to avoid) in your summer skincare products, and an ideal regimen for acne-prone skin.

What Are The Key Factors That Contribute To Skin Breakouts During The Summer Months?

"The change in climate and humidity can definitely be a contributing factor during summer months. Cleansing regularly morning and night is important to keep the skin bacteria free, especially during summer and after workouts."

How Can One Adjust Their Skincare Routine To Combat Increased Oil Production In Hot And Humid Weather?

"Morning and evening cleansing is important for keeping pores clear and bacteria free. Also, switching to lighter weight moisturizers and hydrators can help mitigate breakouts."

How Does Sweat Affect The Skin, And What Measures Can Be Taken To Minimize Its Impact On Breakouts?

"Sweating is a very normal, important and healthy function of the body to control body temperature. Sweat itself is not the issue or main cause of breakouts. Oil, dirt and bacteria combined with heat and tight fitting clothing is the main issue. It’s important to take showers after workouts and to use cleansers with acne fighting ingredients like salicylic acid washes to help keep acne prone skin from breaking out. Changing out of exercise clothing is also important to keep acne prone skin on the body from breaking out."

What Are Some Common Mistakes People Make That Exacerbate Breakouts In Hot Weather?

"A common issue for breakouts once the weather warms is that people continue to use “winter weight” skincare and moisturizer. Sometimes switching to lightweight moisturizer, SPF and makeup products can prevent acne breakouts in hotter humid months."

How Important Is Hydration For Clear Skin In Summer, And What Are Some Recommended Hydration Strategies?

"Hydration is important all year round. For very acne-prone clients I sometimes will just minimize their routine by using a lighter weight serum as their moisturizer in summer months."

Are There Specific Ingredients To Look For In Skincare Products For Summer To Prevent Breakouts?

"One of my favorite ingredients for hydration is hyaluronic acid. The different molecule sizes that are used can vary—a variety of products can contain hyaluronic acid. For acne-prone skin I would recommend a lightweight serum form of hyaluronic acid during summer."

Are There Specific Ingredients To AVOID In Skincare Products For Summer To Prevent Breakouts?

"I highly recommend staying away from oils and heavy, barrier creams."

What Is Your Ideal Regimen For Acne-Prone Skin In The Summer?

"Ideally keeping a simple regimen always works best: in the morning, a gel cleanser followed by lightweight, gel-based serum and moisturizer. SPF always. Lightweight makeup or tinted moisturizer is also less risky than heavy foundation.

In the evening, always cleanse makeup thoroughly, exfoliation and active products like retinols or acids are best used at night. Moisturizer should be gel based and lightweight."

Why Is DNA Repair Complex Suitable For Acne-Prone Skin And How Does It Help Promote Clear Skin?

"The Lapachol in DNA Repair Complex is great for acne prone skin because it supports DNA repair after breakouts and regenerates healthy, new skin. It supports collagen production and soothes red irritated skin, even during summer months after sun exposure and while acne is healing.

The antioxidants in DNA Repair Complex are also beneficial and protective against environmental stress and damage."
